“By the Lafitte” is a tribute to how I experienced Zulu growing up — raw, joyful, loud, and full of soul. I wanted to capture the authentic New Orleans neighborhood version of Zulu, the way it really looked and felt in the early 2000s. We didn’t have fancy setups and ladders with the built in seat. We had the old heads, uncles, aunties, and our parents’ shoulders. Which I still do today with the younger kids. That was our balcony. That was our front row.
This piece blends the past and present of the parade, bringing together memories from the Lafitte Project area — the place where everybody gathered, cooked, grilled, laughed, and waited for the Zulu kings and riders to pass. As kids, Zulu morning meant pure excitement: the sound of the drums, the smell of food on the grill, chasing the floats, screaming for coconuts, and watching whole families come together as one, even during hard times.
